Chairman: Dr John M. Hall

Dr John Hall

John Hall co-founded Leader Partners in 2008 to provide a platform for the delivery of consulting and training services to the biotechnology, pharmaceutical and contract research sectors. He has over 30 years' international experience in these industries at a senior executive level.

John's most recent role was at AAIPharma Inc. where he was President, European Operations, responsible for the development and growth of preclinical and clinical services across Europe and South Africa. Prior to joining AAIPharma, John served as Senior Vice President of Corporate Development for PharmaBio Development, Inc., a subsidiary of Quintiles Transnational Corp. In that role he worked on a broad range of corporate development, investment and strategic partnering ventures including the spin-out of facilities and teams from pharmaceutical companies to form units of CROs.

Previously, he served Quintiles Limited as General Manager, responsible for growing European non-clinical operations and latterly responsible for relationships with the company's European mid-sized and international Japanese accounts. Additional leadership positions held by John include Owner and Managing Director of Pharmacophore, a pharmaceutical and biotechnology product development management consulting firm, Senior Director of European Pre-Clinical Development for Searle, and Manager of Marketing Development for Monsanto Company's Health Care Division.

John has a Ph.D. in pharmacology and initially worked in laboratories in Roche Products Ltd., U.K. and in Inveresk Research International where he eventually headed up the Pharmacology and Consumer Product Evaluation teams.

John has served as a non-executive director on a number of companies and institutes including:

  • Neuropa Ltd., a functional genomics company
  • Edinburgh Research & Innovation Ltd., the technology transfer company of the University of Edinburgh
  • The Roslin Institute, a research institute affiliated to the University of Edinburgh
  • Scottish Enterprise Edinburgh & Lothians Ltd., a local enterprise company

He was recently appointed as a non-executive director of Chakra Biotech, Malaysia.

John is also a member of the Scottish Life Sciences Advisory Group and the NHS Scotland Chief Scientist Committee. He has been an Honorary Lecturer in Management Studies at St. Andrew's University and has been an invited speaker and chairman at conferences in the United States, Europe and Asia.

John Nicholls

John Nicholls gained a PhD in physics (optical materials) in 1994. He broadened his expertise at the CREOL institute in Florida. In 1996 he was a founding member at Crystal Photonics Inc (a spin out from CREOL).

John returned to Scotland to found Photonic Materials Limited (PML) in 1998. PML developed and commercialised products for applications in PET medical imaging, nuclear oil-well logging and fiber optics. Three industry-leading customers launched new scanners using PML's novel detectors. The business raised £13m in venture capital. John led the business as CEO from start-up, managing the exit in October 2005 to Saint Gobain and Schlumberger.

After exiting PML, John was initially engaged on a range of strategic advisory projects, including an evaluation of knowledge transfer opportunities and mechanisms for the Scottish Universities Physics Alliance (SUPA). John also acted as an interim director at Scoopt Ltd (new media and mobile content business), facilitating strategic engagements with Sony-Ericsson, Vodafone, Yahoo and MSN, and leading the M&A process that resulted in the eventual sale of Scoopt to Getty Images in March 2006.

John was the founding CEO at TMRI Ltd from June 2006. TMRI is the principal delivery and exploitation vehicle for the £50m Translational Medicine Research Collaboration (TMRC) involving Wyeth, the four Scottish medical schools at Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow, their associated NHS Boards and Scottish Enterprise.

Since its creation in 2002, John has been a member of the Scottish Science Advisory Committee.
